Title: Hang on! This is your job.
Post by: SoldierofFortune on May 16, 2020, 06:27:30 AM
Any human must! exceed his or her limitations; or there is no way for him or her to access to happiness.

This is the rule to happiness!; and there is no way out except going over the limit!...

And, within my limit; i believe there is nothing i can do...

At least, ''fill in the blank''...

Weird that you think you can define happiness for me.

I'm hereby turning this thread into:

Happiness is?

In which we say what makes us happy each day.

To start.

Happiness is seeing the cake you worked hard in preparing coming out perfecting from the oven and staying in shape.

Happiness is also seeing your fav adult actors face on your fav adult content site appear.

I don't seek happiness, I seek to avoid unhappiness.

I don't seek happiness, I seek to avoid unhappiness.

Epicurus and Freud.  On that note, avoid constipation (what killed Epicurus) and mouth cancer (what killed Freud).

Not for you in particular ... if you are unhappy with yourself, then how far can you run to avoid yourself?  This is where mindfulness and other psych techniques come in handy.  Attempting to artificially stimulate happiness (thru addiction) or suppress pain (thru medication) is dealing with symptoms, not causes.

Soldieroffortune - avoid black/white thinking.  This is self defeating.  You can make things a little bit better, every day, if you follow the following:

So to all, are you unhappy with yourself?  If you are unhappy with someone outside of your social zone (say a politician or religious leader) then you are self defeating.  If what makes you unhappy, is within your social zone, talk it over, don't be afraid to lose your so-called friends.  You can get new friends.  If what makes you unhappy is yourself, then don't blame the world or your social zone.  Deal with your problem directly ... by correcting your warped feelings.  It is natural to like yourself, it is pathological to hate yourself.  The basis is psychology and communication.  Get these straight, the rest will fall in line.

Searching for happiness is fruitless--what the hell is it?  I look for contentment.  And I've found it.  I am content with my life at this stage (old) and I'm very good with that.

I'm mildly amused that I might hit 70 in a few months.

Did you plan to hit any other age?

I didn't expect to live through my school years.

Hit 70?  What did it ever do to hurt you? ;-)

I don't seek happiness, I seek to avoid unhappiness.
To expand on that, I seek the will to change things I can and want to change, and accept things that I cannot change.

To reiterate: You get a long way just accepting things out of your control, while influencing your own life that which you can change.

It isn't exactly stoicism, but it's close to it.

Soldieroffortune .. you know your OP is really just Christian, right?  The Serenity Prayer ...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serenity_Prayer

Of course if you want to derive that from quantum mechanics, give it a shot ;-)

Thich Nhat Hanh has a good darma lecture on "interbeing" that isn't stoic or Christian.  Basically, he says you need to embrace your suffering, to befriend it.  Avoiding it is as impossible as avoiding yourself.  Only then can you have compassion for yourself, and thru that, compassion for others.
