Title: Does anyone know anything about imacs
Post by: fredd47 on August 07, 2019, 01:11:42 AM
I've posted this here because my computers are a hobby. This came about slowly, over about 20 years, because I love new tech and I love shiny new things.

My iMac is over 3year old, and is going just dandy.  However, I want to be prepared when the hard drive starts to fail. Saw the video linked below today. I want to know if what he's done is feasable, or his he a wanker?  I would install  512GB SSD. A 512 GB Imac upgrade kit is available on Ebay for under $200.

I have an iMac, second body original HD.  First died to a lightning strike.  The HD is 9 years old now.  What you can upgrade hardware, depends on the mother board etc.  You need an expert.  Then what OS and utilities you need, is built on that.  I tried to stay apart from the auto-update Borg for years, but all three of my working machines are now sex slaves of the original manufacturers (Apple and Asus).  At some point the hardware will give out, or won't accept the newer patches.  The iMac in the video is comparable to mine (2010 vs 2013).  My professional guy who worked on my dead iMac says ... the screws to take it apart to get to the motherboard, is tricky.

BTW - I was in DoD IT support for the prior 22 years.

I'm no expert, but I do have a Mac Mini 512 G.  Is there anything I can help with?
