Title: Whats your news of choice
Post by: aitm on July 03, 2019, 12:06:44 PM
Out of curiosity. Where do you get most your news. Mainly because I have been kinda limiting mine, not for any other reason other than laziness.

I watch NBC at night, the usual 6:30 show, then everything else is off the net. USATODAY, MSN, NEWSWEEK, CNN, even some YAHOO but little do to the enormous storm of bugs and diseases there.
Whats yours?

My favorite news comes from Amy Goodman at Democracy Now, Thom Hartmann, Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnell at MSNBC, The Young Turks, and of course, Stephen Colbert and John Oliver. Oh, and Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me, on NPR.

A few others I could mention, but those are the main ones. I'm kind of a news junkie...

Those are my exact choices, as well.  Except lately, I don't watch any.  When I watch the news I become upset and pissed.  So, I play my computer games.  What news I get lately is just by accident.

I can't get enough of the stuff. But since I don't have a TV I have to just see what I can get on the internet at the library.

The news can certainly be infuriating and frustrating, but I like to know what's going on in the big world out there.

For example, I see that Uncle Scam is beginning to talk about doing "something" about the homeless problem. Is he going to start rounding them (including myself) up and putting them in concentration camps, like he has the immigrants? When I was younger I was ready, at a moments' notice, to head away from the cities and try to live off the land if I had to, because of the breakdown of civil society. But now I'm probably too old to do that. Hard to find a place where that can be done, anyway.

Why not be honest, that's not why you look up the sun newspaper.

We all know the real reason anyone reads the sun.

ahahaha :)

Even if the main reason is not nudity at least for me,
it is somewhat a reason : )

especially dear deidre column attracts me a lot, ''Deidre's solutions to today's problems'' :D

It's understood from the headline that today's problems is so complex that they are only about sex.

Reuters/AP when I have the time/patience.

Otherwise, r/worldnews or r/politics.  Good mix of relatively decent mainstream sources.

Ocassionally, I visit BBC or The Guardian for international news from a non-American vantage point.

When I really get in news junkie mode, I head to the Council on Foreign Relations or FiveThirtyEight.

I don't really watch news. I tend to find out about things by word of mouth, or via social media, and I'm the last person to find out. I watch John Oliver, but I don't really count that as news. That's more like social commentary and entertainment.

I avoid tabloids as much as possible these days, due to the bias nature of them. Of course you need news from somewhere so aside from what I hear from youtubers I'm subbed to I see stuff on google news and check others sources of the same story from multiple different sources for validity.

I refuse to ever buy a newspaper or sub to a newspaper ever again, the only exception being my local towns newspaper

Can’t see image, but I’m going to assume we agree... I avoid TYT like the plague nowadays. I use to really respect them, but the last few years they have gotten into the realm of really loony left.

AP and Reuters are my go to since they are consistently ranked the least biased sources and are more journalism than punditry. Otherwise NPR and twitter are my two main sources (which I then double check against the aforementioned organizations). Al Jazera as well for more internal issues or Middle Eastern news that doesn’t make the news.

And honestly, I’ve cited Fox a few times lately. They have a few legitimate journalists and I do respect their work, even when I disagree with the slant and morals of the people they work for.

its very hard to find truly unbias, more centrist news sources. I looked up a list of whats consider unbias courses of news, and it listed things like the BBC or Google news. I just laugh at the idea of these sources being unbias.

also it was a j jonah jameson laughing gif, so yes, we do.

I agree.  LBC has videos on YouTube of their political interviews on radio (host + one or more political figures + ordinary Brits calling in).  Wonderful format.  They cover multiple parties, multiple factions.  Everything else in GB is propaganda or editorial rubbish.  I minimize any US news sources, since they are all tabloids.  There is nothing like LBC in the US, it is all Hollywood fake news.  The first I saw that happening was when Richard Nixon came on LaughIn during the 1968 campaign.

Are you a believer in destiny that has been already written and that freewill or human agency has no function?

I guess you believe in both, destiny and freewill alike.

So far my wrong decisions and choices has directed me the paths on which i do not want to be, but things must change. The necessity of changing the things is a must. I will make it happen the things which are in my hands, not my written destiny : )

We have input to what happens to ourselves and what happens to the people around us.  But we are not autonomous.  That feeling of not being completely free, of being dependent on decisions by others and on the environment we live in, we anthropomorphise as Fate.  That's a pagan god actually.

No I don't believe in the past or the future as such.  Though the past is more substantial.  I believe that all action occurs in the present.  The past is pride and regret.  The future is fear and hope.  Emotions, not something written in stone.  But how we feel, can make a self fulfilling prophecy, whether optimism or pessimism.

I can hardly stand to watch tv news anymore.  Too much shouting and over-talking.

Generally speaking I go to the Washington Post, NY Times and BBC.

John Oliver may be the best journalist on TV.

I watch/listen to MSNBC most of the day.  I love Rachel Maddow and Chris Hayes.  Can't stand Chris Matthews.  Yeah, he's older white male liberal from NE, but he won't let anyone finish a sentence and that drives we crazy!  I liked the wilder and crazy guys from the older days at MSNBC too.

But Maddow and Hayes back up their claims with video, day, date, time.  And I REALLY like that.

I was cutting down a tree and a branch sprung up from tension and pushed the bow saw into my hand.  Cut a finger clean to the bone.  I made it to the hospital, but wandered into a lab.  Things got vague after that. LOL!

Hell, I was so drunk I didn't even know I'd hurt myself until the next morning. The skin on my shin was flopped down over my boot, but it didn't hurt at all. They did a good job fixing it up, too. When a doctor asked me if I wanted them to do something about the scar or just leave it, I asked him if it was medically indicated or cosmetically indicated. He said it was cosmetically indicated, so I told him to just leave the scar so I could be reminded not to drink so much in the future. But that didn't really work, either, since I kept right on drinking like a fish.

BBC News, CBC News, Reuters, AP... I can't stand most American news coverage because the website wants to shove ten ads down my throat before I can get anything, or the coverage is presented in conclusions rather than in data, or the site launches videos without my clicking on them, or they lead with something unforgivably sensationalist that's completely unwarranted by the news they're about to deliver, or they just SHOUT HEADLINES AT YOU IN ALL CAPS!!

Newspapers are a mixed bag -- assuming there's not a limit of three articles per month and everything else is behind a paywall in the first place.  Our local paper functions as a house organ for the state GOP anyway, and they're not afraid of editorializing on the front page, so I don't waste my time there.  I'll occasionally peek at my home town paper to see what's going on in my old stomping grounds.

And TV news is for weather emergencies only anymore.

Mainly, if I see a news item that I want to follow up on, I hop on duckduckgo and search for its originalmost source(s).
