It's horrible. And I haven't even seen it yet. 850 years old Cathedral. The spiral collapsed. The roof. FFS.

Cultural disaster. Gothic architecture at its finest.
It's times like these I remember why it's best to avoid social media. For me, it's like being stabbed in the chest to see those photos and videos. ... but then I see all these hateful posts about it. The amount of racism against French people, or celebrating because it happened to Catholics and fuck Catholics, or just outright trolling is fucking ridiculous.
Fuck our obsession with clout and attention, there is not a drop of either that is good for us.
Bloody fucking shame.
Hope the hunchback made it out.
Seriously though: fucking shame. Glad to have seen it in full glory when I was younger.
The world would be better off is social media was neither.

According to Trump, the French didn't do enough raking.

It's still bad, but yanno, this isn't the first time Europeans have had to rebuild churches.
What if it was all just a part of Disney's live action remake of the hunchback of notre Dame ?
You mean the Frollo scene finally got out of hand? It was the best part of the movie!
Yes it is bad, but at this point it looks like it could have been worse. A lot of the artwork had been removed due to the renovations. It is probably too early to know how much damage the heat did too much of the stonework though. My money is on a welder as the cause.
Nah, damn french and their crappy cigarettes.

Yeah, the same here. Here is the drill over here. The dumb religious freaks 'celebrate' because, yanno 'god's punishment' and then seculars get into fight with the dumb getting dumber, sometimes even escalates to threats and blah blah...dumb nationalists, the right wing nutters join in with why someone would be sensitive about en event like this in an another country. Then there is me, fingers crossed for an imminent metorite strike.

Still made me extremely sad
It's very sad, sweety. :/

It could have been a lot worse.
Could have happened last Sunday, during Palm Sunday?

I'm just so glad they were able to save the Crown of Thorns that Jesus wore at his last big shindig.

Just be glad god wasn't home when it happened.
He could've died!
I mean... Died again.
That church building is France. If the fire had raged another 30 mins, nothing would be left. Then the (german) Franks would have to get out and ownership would revert to the Romans.

Then you aren't a barbarian, unlike some still in this world today.
I'm back.
couldn't give my thoughts on it while having been banned, but still, this was tragic to see unfold.
Notre Dame is more then just a religious building or church for catholic worship. Its beauty and architecture is world renowned, inspiring many from literature to architectural design and grandeur. I was glad to know the fire fighters rescued the works of art from, so much history could have been lost.
The fact is with so much soulless modern buildings going for more industrial designs, having monuments of architecture from centuries ago still standing today is an achievement in itself.
however I will say macron's claim they will have the roof restored in 5 years is a little short sighted, its better they spend time and integrity in restoring it.

I was concerned about the rose window, pretty much symbolic art piece. That and the other windows survived thankfully.

newer windows were damaged, but the ones from the 12 century survived, though need to be heavily inspected.
also, big hand to the guy who donated 100 million euros to the restoration project

Glad to have you back, Munch.
Apparently, GOD decided HE was tired of the place. Too many tourists or something. Or maybe HE hated the bells and all.
I always find it vaguely humorous when religious structures burn. After all, if a deity who is in total control allows/causes it, HE must have a reason, right?
(coff coff)...
I regret the damage to it as a piece of outstanding human architecture and worker effort. But as a religious structure holding fake relics and the wealth of poor people frightened by the threats of Hell, I say good riddance to it and may it totally collapse inwardly in itself with no damage to surrounding buildings.
Your POV fits right into an element of the novel Elmer Gantry.

Never read it. What's your point? I don't want to keyword search a whole novel in pursuit of what is certain to be a bogus analogy...

One of the culpable characters (televangelists) dies in a church fire, because they are too disconnected from reality to stay away.

OK, that's a good plot point. Makes a certain sense too. Thanks.

Basically sunk costs. They had defrauded so much to build the church, they couldn't let it just burn. Sometimes when you have a losing hand, you have to leave the gaming table.
I heard that the bees living on Notre Dame's roof survived. That struck me as kind of dangerous. What if one of the pedophiles were to disturb the nest?
