My ancestors when they went West, really were on what was then the frontier.
I can't say I'm in love with the map. It appears to show population density as land became an official territory and/or state. If so that is a bit misleading because people were moving into most of those areas well ahead of what is show on the map. Not to mention the natives that were already there.
