Title: First Mammal Declared Extinct Due to Climate Change

QuoteThis tiny rodent is the first known mammal to become formally extinct as a consequence of human-induced climate change. The Morrison government, in Queensland, Australia, changed the status of the Bramble Cay melomys from endangered to extinct on Monday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Geoff Richardson, an environment department official, told Senate estimates on Monday night that research efforts since 2014 â€" “including a pretty rushed trip in 2015” â€" had failed to identify any melomys individuals in their only known location on Bramble Cay, a tiny Torres Strait island near Papua New Guinea.

Declaring its extinction “was not a decision to take lightly,” Mr Richardson said. “There’s always a delay while the evidence is gathered to be absolutely certain.”

The federal extinction listing comes almost three years after the Queensland government reached a similar conclusion, with a finding that the demise of the melomys “probably represents the first recorded mammalian extinction due to anthropogenic climate change”.
The limited range of the animal, living on a five-hectare island less than three metres high, left it vulnerable to climate change.
However, its 2008 “recovery plan”, drawn up when numbers were likely down to just dozens of individuals, downplayed the risks.
“[T]he likely consequences of climate change, including sea-level rise and increase in the frequency and intensity of tropical storms, are unlikely to have any major impact on the survival of the Bramble Cay melomys in the life of this plan,” the five-year scheme stated.
Leeanne Enoch, Queensland’s Environment Minister, said the animal’s extinction showed “we are living the real effects of climate change right now”.

“We have consistently called on [Prime Minister] Scott Morrison and Melissa Price to show leadership on climate change, instead of burying their heads in the sand.”

Minister Melissa Price said: [It is] incredibly disappointing when any species is formally declared extinct, and everybody has feared the worst for some time, given the Bramble Cay melomys hasn’t been sighted since 2009.

“Our agencies will continue to focus their efforts on protecting species identified as priorities, supported by the Government’s $425 million investment in threatened species programs.”

Great. And yet we are literally still having conversations about if climate change is even an issue because, "It's just a liberal conspiracy! Damned leftists trying to control my life!" is still considered a socially acceptable viewpoint to have.

I just looked on google, and it was a cute little mouse-like critter. It may be the first, but it definitely won't be the last.

Relatively cuddly animals that went extinct in the last 100 years ...

https://www.rd.com/culture/animals-extinct-last-100-years/

There are others that aren't so cuddly.

I would point out, that the major cause of extinction, is loss of wild ecosystem, which has happened because of overpopulation and property development.  I don't think Trump is single handedly responsible for that.

Royal golf course.  My mother has enjoyed St Andrews in Scotland.

Extinction occurs for many reasons over history.  But the modern causes are within our control and because of our actions.  And these things are under our control.  Climate-warming is NOT GodDitIt.  It is not the Sun is getting warmer.  It is not  the Ice Age is ending.  Its that we have managed to put enough gases into the air that hold heat in more than the Earth routinely absorbs back.

To be direct, we are basically farting too much with burning fossil fuels.

I read that humans fart about 13 times a day, on average, so that works out to more than 100 billion farts a day for humanity as a whole. That's a lot of methane we're expelling, and that's a worse greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Investigation of normal flatus production in healthy volunteers (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1648028)

Farts and Burps Contribution to Global Warming (https://sites.psu.edu/siowfa15/2015/11/27/farts-and-burps-contribution-to-global-warming/)

QuoteThis study only examined 10 individuals, so it is a stretch to transfer these results onto the population as a whole, but if one were to do so it would be estimated that collectively the world population as a whole releases about 73 metric tons of methane and 1000 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by farting daily. This is equivalent to roughly 1000 people flying from New York to Los Angeles, daily.

Cows produce about 1,000X as much methane as humans do.

Well, that's a good reason to produce lab-grown meat, which will be coming soon to dinner tables everywhere.

I'm probably going to fight that.  I don't want things to scream at me when I kill them.  But I want to know the could have.

Soylent Green?

Democrats are becoming more and more indigestible.  I post on another forum a bit, one that is Bernie Bro.  They can't wait to become France, if not Cuba.  Venezuela is "not true socialism".  I see no hope, people are idiots and will destroy everything, not just ecology.

The long march through the institutions  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_long_march_through_the_institutions) was a success.
It was worth the effort.

Fundamentally changing America would have been achieved if HRC "Madam President" were in charge.
Because of Trump, it is just delayed a bit. That is why the left is so angry.
Foiled to get democratic socialist utopia realized.

This time it will work. We'll do it properly.

AOC for president!

Considering how scared people are of GMOs, I doubt they'll be quick to accept lab grown meat. In any case, it'll be too late by the time the technology is ready. We're running headfirst past the point of no return, and the best we'll be able to do is damage control.

I have a feeling the environment won't sustain ranch-grown cattle for much longer, so if they want meat they may have little choice before long. We may already be past the point of no return.

The open range has been abused, because the law has allowed no-consequence behavior.  But it can be recovered, as long as you aren't intimidated by assholes leasing Federal land.

I vote to eat people.  If you want to eat insects, I have cockroaches and bed bugs that are free for the taking.

He hates Hillary even more than I do.  That is his weirdness, since he isn't American.  I don't hate PM May.  I just think she is a failure.

PR, have you just had a sudden change of mind?  If so, I sort of welcome it.  I worry though that you have chosen AOC.  I think we would be better off with a more experienced person as President (though she would make a great VP candidate given her interests).

You are making a joke though, right?

When I flew my brother and I down to Fl to get my demented Dad out of the hospital, and we stayed in his townhouse for 2 days and packed up all the clothes and such so my brother could drive Dad in his car to my place for him to stay in  and they had to stay at motels 2 nights on the trip, I was very worried about bedbugs.  I put all Dad's stuff outside in plastic bags in the Summer heat for 2 days.

My brother never reported a problem and neither did I.  Maybe that was because of my precautions and maybe not.  But given how hard those things are to get rid of, it was sure worth the effort.

One could only wish.  The only real solution to people bring bedbugs into your house is the have the house basically shrink-wrapped and heated to 120 for several days.  Doesn't THAT sound like a lot of fun?

I prefer to avoid annoyances like that...
