Title: TV from waaaaaay back
Post by: trdsf on February 04, 2019, 09:44:37 PM
Okay, let's have your favorite TV shows from before you were ten!  Link the openings from YouTube, if at all possible.  I don't care if it hasn't aged well or you wish you could disavow it now, and to prove it, I'll go first.

In my case, that'll be 1973 and earlier.  Here we go.

1965: Jonny Quest.  Because JONNY FUCKING QUEST.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gNBFmlNUfM

1968: Marine Boy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=41k8mvZKWU8

1969: H.R. Pufnstuf.  Because SID AND MARTY FUCKING KROFFT.  (And they're BOTH STILL ALIVE!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orUNj09oN4U

1969: The Pink Panther Show
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bii-PIGprv8

1969: My World... and Welcome To It
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpYCQ5e8T60

1970: The Bugaloos.  Because SID AND MARTY FUCKING KROFFT AGAIN!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlqIB1T0-dA

1970: Tomfoolery
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2fK2r5JKpXU

1970: The Doubledeckers
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAKobLjH3tA

1970: Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hVbZId6BxWc

You know, the worst is, I am sure I'm forgetting something... and I should put in a word for the 1973 Watergate hearings, which I was absolutely mesmerized by:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ovRCp06rSI&list=PLeTIjcXjuhIhWVkSAaMkri8YBHXiVx2ug

Special mention to Fred Rogers.  If you ever needed a half hour to just feel good, it was hard to beat Mr Rogers.  This clip is outside my time frame, but... Margaret fucking Hamilton.

My families first TV appeared in our household in about 1953.  It carried one station, which came on at 6 am and became a test pattern at 10 pm.  Black and white, of course.  I remember programs like Rin Tin Tin, Range Rider, Dragnet, Liberace, news, Arthur Godfrey, Tennessee Ernie Ford, I love Lucy, and Howdy Doody--and more, I'm sure.

Was also listening to the Lone Ranger, Winnie The Poo, and Gunsmoke on the radio.

I was about 4.5 years old when we got a TV, c. 1955. First program was a travelogue with palm trees and beaches. Hawaii? I actually wondered how they got those little people in that box.

Then I discovered Captain Kangaroo, Mr. Green Jeans, and Howdy Doody.

A few years later ... Captain Kangaroo and Mr Green Jeans, Johnny Quest, Top Cat.

A few of my favorites have already been mentioned, like Jonny Quest. I recall a few others that I watched early on:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yKFrI7KDxc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NToYkBYezZA

Of course, at that age I only watched cartoons, except in the evening when we'd have to watch the grown-up stuff, like Perry Mason, or Lawrence Welk.

When I was under ten I watched Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Rogers.  Also Romper Room, I was always disappointed that Miss Sharon never saw my name in her Magic Mirror.  I lived in a good Christian home back then so on Sundays there was Davey and Goliath and a local Show called Jean's Story Time.

While I'm thinking about it...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DiB21H1FH2w

and

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqI5_RA-o4s

(both of these shows were spinoffs from the great Ghoulardi)

and

Now if Bill Kennedy's voice sounds familiar, it might be because of this:

Yup, Bill was the announcer for the George Reeves Superman series.

You could probably do the same flat falsetto if you tried.  I can come pretty close, but it hurts my throat.  Sometimes, when I really try, I can get that falsetto briefly.

OR the lower pitches don't come through at that speed, meaning you only hear the higher notes.

I dunno. I can talk fast, and my voice doesn't suddenly go up in pitch. I can also change the settings in YouTube to double the play speed, and the pitch seems to be unaffected. Maybe YouTube automatically lowers the pitch at higher speeds to counter the effect of speeding up the sound? I don't really know what the difference is. lol

Our local stations weren't fully dedicated to their networks until the late 1960s.  What became the ABC affiliate was originally the flagship station in an attempt at building a fourth network (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overmyer_Network) in the mid-1960s.  WSPD-TV 13 was the first TV station in Toledo, and was affiliated jointly or individually with all four networks (NBC, CBS, ABC and DuMont) at one point or another.  WTOL-TV 11 then came on as the CBS affiliate, and after that 13 picked and chose between NBC and ABC's programming... with 11 showing the NBC programs that 13 didn't.  WDHO-TV 24 followed in the middle '60s as the flagship Overmeyer Network station... which network lasted a whole 31 days.  Eventually, WDHO became the ABC affiliate and WSPD did only NBC so WTOL could only do CBS.  Until the 80s and 90s when WDHO became WNWO and an NBC affiliate and WSPD became WTVG and an ABC affiliate (now joint ABC/CW affiliate), and relative newcomer WUPW-TV 36 which is a FOX affiliate, except they have their news produced by WTOL and is somehow Channel 36 despite being on 46, and moving to 26.

Have I mentioned that Toledo is weird?

I <3 Adam West so much.  I don't think anyone was ever so genre-savvy.

By the bye, if you can handle so much over-acting in one show... there was a pilot made for an Alexander the Great TV series in the 60s... starring William Shatner as Alexander and co-starring Adam West, as well as guest stars John Cassavetes (or, in the pseudo-Greek letters they used, John CassavStSs) and Joseph Cotten (CottSn)!

Too much choice (overchoice) can cause a variety of negative psychological effects, like decision paralysis and discontent.

It helps to narrow your parameters and realize that even great shows have the occasional bad episode and that's okay - you can't hold out for perfection.

When I was a child, we watched what Dad wanted to watch on TV when he got home.  That was Bonanza, Gunsmoke, The Virginian.  Dad ruled the TV after dinner.  To be fair, we kids ruled the TV in the weekend morning cartoons, and Mom controlled it in the mid-day.

Most of the evening shows were pretty good.  I thought very highly of Adam on Bonanza, and Palladin (sp?) on Have Gun, Will Travel.  But I learned that the more shows there were, the more the creative talent got spread around.  I stopped watching around 15.  The Star Trek showed up, and I was back.

After that it was back to the "Ho-Hum" for a decade...  Then Babylon 5 and the story arcs where I realized some people were doing something beyond episodic plots (where every show didn't just restart the characters from no past).  Which is, I suppose why I liked Japanese anime when it showed up (because at least there was a story being told , if very slowly).

I've heard of that strange psychological effect before. I have a cousin who said TESIII: Morrowind gave him headaches because it was too open ended. He didn't know what to do with all of his options, and that caused him physical discomfort.

This is why men are stereotyped as bouncing from channel to channel, annoying their other family members.

Cavebear ... my dad was the same  And most of my life growing up, we only had one TV.

My dad, too, controlled the TV in the evenings.  But for most of my life we only had 1 station--then in HS we moved to Portland and he was the controller.  Then we moved to small, small, small town CA (Dad worked at an ammo dump and the town around it was small in case the whole base went up--fewer dead then) and we had only 3 stations--2 if the weather was bad.  He still chose tho.

Because of Dad, I knew Gunsmoke and Virginian, but not Bonanza.  That and Combat starring Vick Morrow.  Always wondered why I grew up so violent ;-(  Comedy initially was Laugh-In.  Later it was Sanford & Son and All In The Family.

When I was in a foster home in east Texas, we'd come in from the fields for "dinner" (that's what we called lunch) and dad would have to watch his soap opera, I forget which one, but he HAD to watch it every day. He hated the weekends because "his show" wasn't on.

Lost in Space--I hated that show from the moment I first saw it--especially the brat kid!  Even as a kid and I wanted to watch TV and that show was on (we had only one station then), I went to my room and played with my tinker toys instead of watch that shit.

Safe space in 1965?  Ahead of your time.  Yes, compared to Star Trek or Time Tunnel, it was cringeworthy.

When the idiot shows came on, I crawled out my bedroom window and stared at the stars and learned the constellations...  Lost In Space was hideous.  And Space 1999 (?) where the Moon left Earth's orbit due to some explosion...  AACK!

Yes, Space 1999 was a Martin Landau (one of the stars as well) idea.  I think they were making fun of Velikovsky.  British-Italian show.  What could go wrong with that alliance? '=)

I thought it was better than Quantum Leap.  Quantum leap always stayed within a few decades before the present.  Time tunnel went t relatively distant future and past.  My favorite episode was the Feminist future one, where humans were bioengineered as silver skinned, silver dressed drones in a social hive.  They had a time machine (guess it took them centuries to reproduce the Time Tunnel).  They were going back in time, to kidnap people just before they died.  They did this to Hitler.  I think they were trying to re-diversify their social and biological matrix.  Episode 5, The Last Patrol.  America's answer to that eccentric Dr Who ;-)

Hard to believe, but Scooby Doo is 50 this year.  I used to hate that show until I realized that beneath all the cheap animation and cheaper jokes... the answer was never the supernatural one.  There was always a rational explanation -- it was never a ghost, alien, or monster.  It was the janitor or groundskeeper or the owner of the amusement park.

Okay, yeah, well, there was a (semi-)talking dog.  I figure most of the show was from Shaggy's viewpoint, and Bob knows I've been wasted enough to have a conversation with a pet before.  And then the buzz wears off and the rational explanation comes along.

In Toledo, there were three choices: WSPD had "Uncle Ben's General Store" sporadically from the 60s to the 80s (with at least two different Uncle Bens -- the only videos I've been able to find are from the 80s with a much younger Uncle Ben than I remember as a kid, and as I recall, the original one was one of their newscasters), WDHO briefly had a mad scientist themed kid's show that I only remember because I was on it (and they dispensed with it when they signed up as an ABC outlet so it ran for not much more than a year, if that), and WTOL had "Patches and Pockets" that ran from '71 to '89.

I miss local programming -- all there is anymore is the news, and sometimes a morning (news) show.

No, drawing on the 10" TV screen even with the covers that you could use (the details of that fail me) were not parentally-approved.  It might have logically led to drawing on the walls, I suppose..

You may be missing a point about sidekicks.  I don't mean Robin to Batman or any of the DC types just a younger version of the main character.  A proper sidekick both complements the main character and demonstrates some weak points and sometimes they "step up".

The "official" reason was the headgear (ostensibly strapped on) and that she supposedly weighed less than 90 pounds.  I weighed less than 90 pounds when this show was on, and even with a jacket fully spread out I couldn't get off the ground.  First time a nun lied to me...

Oh, boy, I used to love that show.  I remember watching it with my mom. Now the theme song is running through my head.

Yeah, I watched it a lot, too, but now I barely remember it.

The Six Million Dollar Man. I was totally into this show as a kid. The opening sequence is classic.

With The Prisoner, McGoohan was improvising the whole thing.

Emma Peel was my favorite ;-)

Jeez, I didn't realize just how many spy type programs there were back then! I remember most of those, but some I don't remember at all. I think the only one they missed was Tom of T.H.U.M.B.

The Village is a real place, what British call a vacation village, in Wales.  They have The Prisoner fan conventions there:

One of the first shows I watched on TV. (I remember getting a TV, and wondering how they got those little people in that box. (I kid you not.))
