Title: What's the nerdiest thing you have/do?
Post by: Plu on January 31, 2019, 03:53:12 PM
Just curious after seeing the D&D thread. For me, D&D used to be the nerdiest thing that I do, but it actually got beaten out by a new game I picked up, Star Wars: Armada.

Now I own a bunch of plastic spaceships that you game with on a table and holy crap is that game ever nerdy. And amazing. I'm loving it, but it's really hard to find other players, because very few people are willing to invest in it. Expensive hobby. But very pretty.

Especially my new Hammerheads, which just came in today.

Gotta love that Star Wars spaceship look

I try to resist seeing things in terms of nerdy/non-nerdy, because "nerdy" has often been used a pejorative.  Though, for some strange reason, I doubt that I could convince many people to put into their own words exactly what's wrong with liking science fiction, fantasy, or superheroes.

But to answer the question, it would probably be unabashedly singing White And Nerdy at work.  Or consulting real star charts with screenshots from Battlestar Galactica to try to figure out how close the Battlestar Galactica was getting to Earth.  Or editing XML files in a scifi video game so that the game's star names more closely resemble real star names.

The Hammerhead is a model from the Star Wars: Armada tabletop wargame. You can buy them from Fantasy Flight if you really want one, but they're quite small and they're mounted on a special gaming-stand, so they're not ideal if you just want something pretty to look at.

I’m thinking of buying some model ships and getting a glass case to house them in, but the models i want are either not available or expensive

Cool! I never had the patience to get into that. My wife does enjoy painting miniatures that we use for Dungeons & Dragons games. And some or our prettier board-game pieces as well. I just get frustrated when I try stuff like that.

Quote
I am not sure what counts. I have a Socrates and an Athena of Pireus bust (just the head, it's actually a full figure sculpture. From Athens), an epic Legolas figure (it was a gift), an amonite, a trilobite fossil (these two even have names) a 3 fish cluster fossil, a plastic witch head, a plastic pteronodon, a pumpkin (constant halloween) and a small model hand on my desk. Stones, sea shells...etc. Sand from Pacific Ocean. I lost a piece of Etna Mountain. Frozen lava. (Also a piece of Keops Pyramid after getting mad to the idiot who actually took it and brought to me 'But oh you love it' 25 years ago, because of what she did. Cleaning lady threw it away.)

A Leonardo ornitophter which I haven't assembled yet. Anolog astronomy charts which was done for students in the dept of the univ 20 years ago. A 1000 puzzle of Verenose's, The Wedding at Kana. (I was never able to finish it, mom did it twice.) Mostly books on history of art, anthropology, philosophy...some books about paleontology, entomology, rocks, fossils... Periodicals. Folders of weird articles on specific insanities of old academics printed out from databases. Comic books. Vertigo and Calvin and Hobbes. Old Mad books (Dave Berg, Don Martin) and Charlie Browns printed in 60s. A little notebook collection which I also use. Simple stuff. From Moleskine to very old ones which are not sold any more. I have a soft spot for notebooks and stationary. Esp. pencils. A lot of useless junk from museums I have been to. And Norman the Skeptic. He fell and broke a part of his head, but still kicking. He is a smaller human skull replica, I befriended in 2013. He is from Portland. Some drawing books and drawing stuff. Pencils, crayons. An easel, it's actually mom's.

That's quite a collection you got there!

Probably the nerdiest thing I do is study Elder Scrolls lore, which goes a lot deeper than you might think. I also like to roleplay, and would like to join a game of D&D after a get a job with a more consistent schedule. I've learned how to use a few game creator engines, and I've made some sprites to work with. I haven't heard about this Star Wars: Armada game, but I have tried Heroscape recently, and it seems similar in concept with its expensive figurines used as game pieces.

Oh, holy Bob.  How much space does this board have?

Let's see... just on top of the hutch on my computer desk is a LEGO Companion Cube (from the Portal games), a stick-and-ball model of a caffeine molecule, my COSWN (https://severe-weather.org) ID tag, a wrist-worn compass of the type issued to Soviet cosmonauts in the 60s and early 70s, and a custom action figure of the character I wrote in our APA in the early 90s.  On the dresser next to me, my coin folders, most of my fountain pen inks, a lava lamp, my amateur radio license, and a can of Jolt Cola.

Glancing to my left are on display three Illuminati: New World Order (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illuminati%3A_New_World_Order) cards autographed by designer Steve Jackson, my shortwave receiver, copies of the two APAs I belonged to, a test tube rack holding about 30 ink samples, and the base of a desk pen set (the pen is out for repairs) commemorating the Luna 2 mission (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luna_2).

Over my left shoulder, the 2' plush Dalek I crocheted a couple years ago (the plush Cthulhu is in the living room), the Pop! figures of Tom Servo and Crow T Robot, a Dilbert lunchbox, and a microVAX 3000.  Directly behind, a Dalek pencil case repurposed to hold my gaming dice, on the nightstand.  Nothing but bed and wall to the right.  Except for the vintage PC-XT and Terak systems in the corner.

And that's without leaving my bedroom, and leaves out several areas of interest, and doesn't get anywhere near my library.

I know, I'm hopeless.  XD

I crocheted mine out of rainbow yarn so I could have a sort of tie-dye Cthulhu.

I grew up on AH games!  I still own 10 or so.  Gettysburg was one of my favs.  Too bad we aren't neighbors, we could play face-to-face.  Loved Panzer Blitz and D-Day and War of the Roses and Dune and Starship Trooper and Facts In Five and Panzer Leader and --and I'm forgetting many.  Love them--a sad sad day when AH folded.

I had a copy of Gettysburg -- Bob only knows where it is now.  Never did understand how to play it.  Tactics games elude me; Risk is the closest I can get to them.

I did the RPGs -- AD&D, Traveller, Dragonquest (until TSR bought and buried it, anyway -- if you played 2nd Edition, you've essentially played Dragonquest), V&V, Stalking the Night Fantastic (now Bureau 13), even Teenagers from Outer Space and Toon!.  More nerdistry -- I even have a couple playtesting credits under my belt, for Stellar Games' A.C.E. Agents and modules for It Came from the Late Late Late Show.

And yes, I still have almost all my books and dice (kept in the aforementioned vinyl Dalek).

Well, I can honestly say that playing D&D today may be the nerdiest thing I've done so far.
Typing out the adventure so far, might be even nerdier than that. And I just might do it.

Risk was OK, back in the day.  Beware Australia!

Tactics games back in the day, you had to keep track of unit loses.  That was a bummer.  Like the computer version better, where all the accounting is done for me.

No.  But I did discover once that I left myself online here.  I do apologize for that.  But if you are wondering, yes I have been up and online since 8 pm yesterday.  I was playing Civ2  on an offline Windows 95 tower and checking for for emails, posts here and questions on a gardening site.

1.  I can stand to lose a little weight.  I'm 10 pounds over the "ideal" chart.  I don't worry about that but I know what the chart says.  I weigh myself about once a week..

2.  I am at my best after not having to much food.  I eat too much and I get ornery.  You could probably guess that.

3.  Closing the computer room door and having the cats away helps.  I mean, I love them all, but they aren't good when I'm trying to type.

Pokemon: used to be blue. And that still has a place in my heart nostalgiawise. But nowadays  probably either firered or heartgold.

Anime: if you are someone who doesn´t consider avatar the last airbender an anime, i´d probably go with ´sakamoto desu ga' which is hilarious.

Manga:
Kaguya sama: love is war

At one point in my life (pre computer) I was really into counted cross-stitch.  Made several christmas stockings and a couple of landscapes.  My 'big' project was to do a NYY logo of about 2ft. by 2ft.  Never got around more than the start of planning it.  Prior to that I was into string art (boards and nails).  I even taught that to my students.  And even sold a few pieces. :)  Did some 'adult' coloring books and several large jigsaw puzzles and managed to glue and mount a couple.  Yep--I do have a deep nerd streak.
