Title: Civil War Documentary
Post by: jenluvsjere on June 20, 2013, 08:18:56 PM
Many of you may have already heard of this or have already seen it. But, I recently started to watch the entire Civil War series by Ken Burns. It's 9 episodes long, about 1-2 hours each. The detail is a lot better than pretty much any Civil War documentary I've seen. It's more vivid in detail; specific soldier accounts are mentioned throughout the whole series.
I thought it was interesting how Shelby Foote, one of the historians interviewed mentioned how some of the greatest poems and writings came from war. I never really processed that until he said it.

If you have seen it, what did you think?

Foote 's telephone number was still listed even after he became famous.  In Tony Horowitz's Confederates in the Attic, he interviews Foote and is constantly interrupted by the telephone ringing.  Foote was rather polite but stern with the callers. I would have loved to hear his voice over the phone but I would never have worked up the courage to call him.

I definitely found Shelby Foote to be a charming man. He was informal and he would laugh and talk about the people in the war in such a personal way. It was almost like listening to a family member tell a story.

Ken Burns's WW2 documentary is quite good too. I have the sound tracks to both.

I'll have to check it out. I have this large Civil War coffee table book by Matthew Grady that kind of got me interested in the subject. Really awesome pictures.
