Title: Snake people, get in here!
Post by: PopeyesPappy on August 06, 2018, 12:50:34 PM
Can anybody tell me what this is? It's eating my fish, and I don't know if it is a cottonmouth.

I can't be sure, but it doesn't look like a cottonmouth.

They have a body that's much thicker than the tail, so that one probably isn't one.

Snakes may have originally evolved at sea, then moved onto land later.  Just to get dried off.

It looks harmless.  Not a pit viper.  Some large garter snake maybe?

My brother is an expert on fish and reptiles and said it is difficult to tell from the photo but he guesses it's a rat snake.

OK, rat snakes around here tend to be black.  But still no threat.  Dude, they eat RATS!  What's to object about?

That could eventually lead to a one-party system in the US.

Or did you mean literal rats?

LOL!  Well, yes.  I'm usually pretty literal.  If I mean political rats, I will SAY "Republicans".  ;)

I don't know what kind of snake it is, but it is most definitely not a cottonmouth.

There was a 2 headed coppermouth discovered locally a few weeks ago...  Fortunately, it wasn't killed but guided into a bucket for study.  And a gardener was dry-fanged by one recently.  Given that the authorities say there are none in the area, I thing that is pretty funny.

Waste?  The very definition of good compost.  We should all aspire so high.

I willingly grant you the right to be in my compost bin.  I would need to add a lot of leaves though...

Yeah, don't leave the leaves out.

Leaves cover the decomposition smell, balances well with meaty object and kitchen scrapss, and reduces pH problems.  The wire top keeps vultures and other large pests away.
