Title: Baha'i Forum
Post by: TheThinker on June 19, 2013, 02:51:08 PM
Hello everybody,

if anyone is interested in giving me a hand, just join that forum as well, it's called bahaiforums.com

I'm under the same name there, and I just cannot take any more of their arrogant posts ! Besides, they are 100 (most active) and I am just one.

It would be very helpful (for them, too) , to hear another opinion, other than theirs, from another atheist. Maybe I'm aggressive sometimes, or just cannot express myself as well as I want (English is not my native language...).

Thanks !

PS: Does anyone here know a good website or a video about the kinds of prophecy there are ? (e.g. postdiction, self-fulfilling,etc..) Thanks again !

I wouldn't waste my time with them or any other delusional people, because if they were rational they wouldn't be what they are. You can't have a rational debate with people that don't have a clue what sound reasoning is. All they do is make you frustrated as hell with their neurotic nonsense. Let them be with their magical cave-man thinking. Take a walk in nature and see its wonders and relax. Solitary

I don't think people who help others , and let them see another point of view , are wasting their time. At least I wouldn't say this for myself, because if someone hadn't "wasted their time", it would have taken me longer to stop believing (if at all).

As a former Bahai, why would you waste your time on this?  People will become atheists, or not, in their own time.  There is nothing that anyone could have said that would have convinced me that there was no god when I was a god believer.  In fact, I pitied a close friend of mine who was an atheist.  I felt I knew something he didn't.  It's funny to me years later that he was right and I was the one full of shit.  For me, it took years of critical thinking to get away from that.

@TicToc

I am not trying to make them atheists. I just wanna look a bit deeper into their teachings and their beliefs, and make them think about it hard enough to give me answers. In that way they might reconsider or look at it from another point of view.

How did you finally change your mind ?

Don't bother teaching people to not believe in god. They don't believe in god because they have a good reason to.

Teach them to think. They mostly believe in god because they don't think about it.

There's nothing special about the Bahai'.  They don't give you extra points for converting one.  It's not like they are a little less crazy than the others, and therefore, more open to reason.  It's just another religious sect.

It was very gradual and lots of little things.  I started thinking about the enormity of the universe and about how ridiculously small we are.  A few of the Bahai laws troubled me, but when I was a believer, I simply accepted those as gods guidance for humanity.  (Women not allowed on the elected "Universal House of Justice", burning as a punishment for arsonists, gays not allowed to act on their natural urges, Etc.  I am not a woman, an arsonist, or gay, but i found these laws baffling.) Eventually, I started to wonder what I would think if someone today said they were a messenger from God...I'd think they were nuts!  So why do I believe that there were a handful of men in the past who received messages from God.  (Baha'is believe that Bahaullah, Muhammed, Jesus, Moses, etc., were all such men.) And why would a God even do such a thing?  It's absurd.  Then I started reading and watching lectures from Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens.  I revisited Carl Sagan from a new perspective.  Bahais will tell you that science and religion should agree, and that if science disproves something that religion is saying, that the religion needs to adjust their views and beliefs.  It took me longer than I'm proud to admit to figure out that just because science doesn't disprove something doesn't mean that I should believe in unicorns, or magical teapots, or that a god whispers things to select men throughout history to provide guidance to mankind.  It was nothing that Baha'is themselves did, and in fact I still believe them to be some of the kindest, most positive focused people around...it's just that it's all built on a foundation of looniness.  As all religions are.
