I want to propose a thought experiment; imagine you are watching the news, and one of the breaking headlines is, "Today in ______, nearly 600 women were arrested for staging a peaceful protest against the government's policy of separating children from their families and holding them in makeshift detention centers which are incredibly understaffed and essentially cages.".
What countries come to your mind? Saudi Arabia? Iran? North Korea? China? Russia? Turkey?
My guess is not any Western democracy.

Our roads and infrastructure is rubbish, our Electricity supplier now produces the same ammount of electricity than what was 20 years ago, with a price 700% higher and 4 times the employees.
Our mines is in danger to be nationalized, our property to be confiscated by the state without any compensation.
No one wants to invest in SA because it will be stupid.
Our borders are open, and we have about 15 million illegal immigrants living in poverty, supporting them self with crime.
We have Black on White murders and rapes unequal on Earth.

Many countries have made the mistake of just being natural resource producers for others. Venezuela for instance. Lack of local economic development, because of a "freebie" can be a bad thing. In the case of ancient Athens, they took the local silver bonanza from Laurium, and spent the money on the Department of the Navy, which saved them when the Persians arrived. I doubt except in that one case, that bonanzas have been well spent.

In the grand scheme of things, we only receive a fraction of our immigrants from those three nations (and for two of those at least, it's mostly people who weren't in favour of the communist regimes who left).
The overwhelming majority of our immigrants come from non-communist nations... in the top 30 countries by immigration, it's about 33 million non-communists to 7 million people fleeing communist countries. If you look at the numbers, the three most common government traits of the countries being fled are high corruption, highly conservative and highly authoritarian... three things the United States is getting progressively more and more.
