Title: Pat Robertson Realizes Creationism is a Joke
Post by: Unbeliever on January 17, 2018, 08:11:17 PM
I'd never have expected Robertson to say that creationism is nonsense, but here it is:

It's about time someone in the evangelical community started waking up, and I hope he can have some influence over the other fundamentalist creationists.

Robertson is Pentecostal, so Southern Baptists won't believe anything he says, anyway.

Pat Robertson, world's least expected pro-science empiricist.

I'm impressed.  I take back half of the bad things I've said about Pat.  Now if only he could apply his newfound empiricism to demonic possession and faith healing and other supposed miracles...

If he hadn't made a career out of faith, he might've been a hell of an advocate for rationality.

If you discount his connection with "blood" diamonds.

This crusty old p.o.s just wants everyone to adhere to only his belief system and no other

There was once a day when no one believed that trees had nymphs living in them that controlled tree growth.  There was once a day when people stopped believing that tides crashing on the shores caused volcanoes.  There once was a day when people stopped believing in multiple gods.  There once was a day when people stopped believing in any gods at all.

Oops, I'm slightly ahead of my time.  Carry on...

I think that as long as we have the human nature that we currently have, we won't shed faith.

Do you mean (I hope) that in the future, we might?

Not completely, but we're making progress in overall rationality. The only thing that could stop that trend is the Internet.

Pat Robertson speaking for evolution.  I might start doubting it then.  Actually, I don't know what to make of this.  I'm expecting him to retract it later in one of those "clarifications" often used by politicians.

The internet is probably the major driving force in rationality. Free information available to anyone with just a Google search. The problem is when people on social media get in their echo chambers, but they've always done that.

I suspect Robertson has something more subtle in mind.  He realizes the 6004 date is a loser.  So something newer might work.

It's been 20 years since I read a survey in a major newspaper that revealed something like 60% of Americans believed the Earth was less than 10,000 years old.  I was so flabbergasted that I mentioned it in another forum, and was surprised again by several replies noting that those were about the same figures they had been seeing over the years.  I wonder how much has changed in 20 years?  It's been so long that I can't certify the percentage was 60%, but it was unbelievably high.  It may have been higher than that.

Robertson mentioned that dinosaurs were 65 million years old and that the proof was evident in layers of rocks.

I wonder if he has suddenly had a crisis of factualism.

The poll results have gone down quite dramatically.  Now 38%

http://news.gallup.com/poll/210956/belief-creationist-view-humans-new-low.aspx

Quote•38% say God created man in present form, lowest in 35 years
•Same percentage say humans evolved, but God guided the process
•Less-educated Americans more likely to believe in creationism

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The percentage of U.S. adults who believe that God created humans in their present form at some time within the last 10,000 years or so -- the strict creationist view -- has reached a new low. Thirty-eight percent of U.S. adults now accept creationism, while 57% believe in some form of evolution -- either God-guided or not -- saying man developed over millions of years from less advanced forms of life.

This is the first time since 1982 -- when Gallup began asking this question using this wording -- that belief in God's direct creation of man has not been the outright most-common response. Overall, roughly three-quarters of Americans believe God was involved in man's creation -- whether that be the creationist view based on the Bible or the view that God guided the evolutionary process, outlined by scientist Charles Darwin and others. Since 1982, agreement with the "secular" viewpoint, meaning humans evolved from lower life forms without any divine intervention, has doubled.

Therefore atheists are un-natural ;-)

He never struck me as very bright, even before he became a doddering old man.  While it does not speak well for America, he has been able to resonate with a lot of Americans.  What he seems to lack in intelligence, he compensates for in ambition.  He even ran for president about 40 years ago.

It was the Republicans kissing up to the Evangelicals and to Robertson, that made it a "never again" deal for me, in 1986.  I was a stronger Democrat in 1988.  I don't support theocracy, even fake medicine wagon ones.

Why does 38% sound a lot like the number of Republicans too?  Must just be a coincidence...

probably because he never has anything important to say

If Pat Robertson met a 65million year old dinosaur, he either met one of the most intelligent or one of the most bat-crazy critters around. ;-)

He also understands that climate change is real (https://web.archive.org/web/20081211155027/http://www.wecansolveit.org/page/s/unlikelyalliance?source=Ad.com&subsource=SharptonandRobertson728X90), and supports marijuana legalization (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/08/us/pat-robertson-backs-legalizing-marijuana.html).  Maybe there's an actual reasonable person way deep down inside there trying desperately to get out?  One hopes, considering his dismal track record at prophecy (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_Robertson#Predictions).

Heh.  Maybe he should run for president again, with the slogan "Still crazy, but not as bugfuck as you thought".

If Pat Robertson believes any of the things he has railed against over the years, he is either the scam artist I've always thought he was and a cynic glamming money from the simple-minded, or an idiot.  I suspect partly both.
