North Korea is led by a crazy person.  So is the US, and this worrisome.  North Korea might even attack us, kill a lot of people, and cause a lot of property damage.  This may not be a concern of to Kim Jong-un if he feels his own life is unimportant, but I'm pretty sure that with Trump as president or any other president of another party, a nuclear attack by North Korea would render the entire country a lifeless quarantine zone.  It would cease to exist as a nation.  The land would be given to South Korea in the hopes that someday it might even be habitable.  This of course does not assure that such a thing could never happen.  We are talking about crazy people running countries.  Anything can happen.

It's a shame we have reached a point where this wasn't assumed to be a malfunction but instead a serious threat.

I'm sure the uninformed and hysterical assumed it was a real threat.

Really? What about that makes one misinformed?

The story breaks my heart.

If you grew up in the Cold War, you would never assume it is a malfunction.  An exercise is preceded with "Exercise, Exercise, Exercise".  This wasn't.  I see it as a human interest story, about what human beings do when confronted with the unexpected.

That's true. For me, the thought of nuclear annihilation has always been pretty low on things I feared... much more concerned about being shot at school or jumped by a bunch of racist idiots. I guess I just always kinda naively hoped that living in fear of the bomb was for the older generations and would stay that way.

Jamie Lee Curtis on Facebook.

"This Hawaii missle scare is on YOU Mr. Trump. The real FEAR that mothers & fathers & children felt is on YOU. It is on YOUR ARROGANCE. HUBRIS. NARCISSISM. RAGE. EGO. IMMATURITY and your UNSTABLE IDIOCY. Shame on your hate filled self. YOU DID THIS!"

There you go. We have the culprit.
Thank you Jamie.

Whoever JLC is, Trump didn't invent human conflict or military confrontation.  And it would appear that it was a Hawaii state employee who erred.  Even Rep Tulsi Gabbard jumped on the band wagon, and I though she was smarter than that.

Not far into the article, it describes the exact moment of human error.  But there was another error before that ... crappy software design.  You don't put "test missile alert" right next to "missile alert".  I accidentally shut down the company server (at a previous job) because a typo happened to correspond to a legitimate command I didn't want to execute.

The thing that concerns me is if Hawaii were to have a real crisis and ignore it because of this false alarm. That would really suck.

Cross-checking is needed. A single source is always to be suspected.

Tbf, I'm not sure what good the alarm even does against a nuclear warhead.

Yeah, good point. I bet there's very little in the way of civil defense, or bomb shelters, in Hawaii or anywhere else in the US.

Well, if you make it too easy to issue a missile alert, you end up with false alarms. If you make it too hard to issue a missile alert, you end up issuing the alert too late to help anyone.

There was a false alarm in Japan, too.  Considering their history, this seems like a particularly upsetting event.

Websites and menus are often non-intuitive guessing games built on idiosyncratic notions of the designer.  They are more like puzzles to be solved.  Sometimes its fun to mess with them, but sometimes I just want to order a fucking pair of socks.

Socks are good.  I very much miss Footjoy Cushion Sole Socks that came in many colors.

But when it comes to serious screens, "Blow Up The World" should probably not be on the same drop down menu as "Test The System".

Of course not, double a half-wit.  I was in the business of assisting offices to manage their own costs.  I got them to look at cell phone and smart phone costs to not let SOME IDIOTS stay on line 24/7.

PS - Do the math before getting annoyed... ;)
