Title: What the...???
Post by: ƵenKlassen on December 13, 2017, 10:16:07 PM
Why are there so many contradictions in the Christian bible?...

Like this for example:

Genesis 1:28 God encourages reproduction.

Leviticus 12:1-8 God requires purification rites following childbirth which, in effect, makes childbirth a sin. (Note: The period for purification following the birth of a daughter is twice that for a son.)

And there's more of that where that came from:

Because the Bible was written by several people over thousands of years, each author conveniently changing God to suit their needs. In the earliest books, Yahweh was one of several gods, but somewhere along the way, one prophet decided that Yahweh wasn't just jealous of other gods, but he was the only god. God's personality, desires, and rules reflect on the author at the time.

First off, disappointed in the lack of bat tits.

Second, seems an odd thing to make a forum post titled with a shock and surprise over like you just found this out like its breaking news.

before the internet, the spread of information was constrained and getting across the idea that the bible was a load of bullshit written by cult leaders to manipulate people was harder to get across. These days with information tied in with anonymity, as in telling and reading things in private, as well as things people open and not sourced just to sell newspapers or gain ratings, we live in a time now where we can tell the facts about these cults, Christianity, Islam, Judaism, without being shouted down or censored or just information being withheld.

Actually, according to surveys and stuff, hardly any Christians do read the Bible. Mostly they just get it in little cherry-picked spurts from the pastor/preacher/priest on their so-called holy days.

Paradoxical poetry isn't meant to be read literally, or make sense.

Christians don't read the Bible. They let apologists tell them what the Bible says and means, and apologists are expert bullshitters.

You would think, but be wrong (sadly).  The bible succeeds BECAUSE of the contradictions.  There is something there for everyone.  No matter what one thinks (as a theist), you can find a quote to support your views.  Never mind the contradictions, if one can find any part you like, you're proven!  The Bible said so!

And the same crap with all other religious texts.

I'll point out that *I* don't "have" any bible quotes.  They come from a book of superstitions like all the others.  They aren't mine.

O.P. I think its full of contradictions because nobody did any fact checking before it was dumped on the world.

It may be that people still believe it because the Catholic church kept it locked up for hundreds of years where nobody could read it and find the contradictions.

Or in the U.S. it may be that people still believe it because they are too dumb to think for themselves. I got people on facebook that still think Trump is a hero. Trump is going to be pres for 8 years. If democrat Mueller tries to impeach Trump they gonna break open grandpa’s gun cabinet to keep him away from Trump. There are a lot of people dont know that Medicare or Social Security are government programs want to make sure the government isnt gonna mess with them.

Well, "English" is mostly a blend of French, Norse, German, and merchant words from far away.  On one hand, it is amazing that English has any poetry.  On the other, poetry from other languages seems so easy (everything rhymes by the endings of words.

I was sitting at a cafe in Berlin back in the day and the two young (college age) ladies at the next table were doing their English homework. They were struggling. I popped a suggestion their way and they came over and sat at my table. ( :) ) A few minutes later one of them slammed her book down and said (cleaned up) "Do they really teach this shit to babies?" Coming from a German speaker this was impressive.

There were two classes 700 years ago in England.  The lower classes speaking Anglo-Saxon, and the upper class speaking French, with fancy words from Latin etc in there for those who went to Oxford.  The Black Death changed all that.  A creole language was formed by all the orphans, a broken language of the streets.  That and lower class people wanting to sound sophisticated with loan words.  Old Anglo-Saxon itself, is closely related to a Dutch dialect ... Frisian.

Yeah, "assault AND battery", mutton vs sheep" etc.  But, um, anglo-saxon is anglo-saxon from denmark.  I can go back farther if you want...

Not by dialect ... by geography.  Angles, Saxons and Jutes.  Jutes in Denmark, Saxons in NW Germany, Angles closer to Holland.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Saxon_settlement_of_Britain#/media/File:Saxon.emigration.5th.cen.jpg

The dialect is Frisian today, and they are on the N Sea on the edge of Holland today.  1600 years ago, not so much.

Danes came later ... in 850 CE.  The Anglo-Saxons came in 450 CE.  Denmark wasn't Denmark, until the Danes moved down from S Sweden into that peninsula when the Anglo-Saxons-Jutes moved out.  On thing that motivated them to move, was to get away from Attila the Hun, and take advantage of Romano-British weakness.

I tried to learn some Spanish.  I bought a set of 4 or 5 DVDs on the cheap.  It started out OK, going real slow, but after I had mastered maybe 10 vocabulary words they started throwing sentences at me with words I had never been exposed to.  I never got so lost in such a hurry.  I gave up in despair, even though I heard Spanish was supposed to be one of the easier languages to learn.  Maybe I should have tired Mandarin.

The Angles came from the Baltic shores.  Well, ALL the goths came from the Asian steppes originally. Not going back to OOA details of course...

Sorry you were a victim of poor pedagogy.  Spanish is a nice language.  I learned Esperanto last September (in 2 weeks) ... the easiest language to learn (and similar to Romance languages).  Also some people have a knack, not everyone takes to language, even their native one.

Mandarin is seriously challenging ...

I think that 6000 years ago, when the Bronza Age came to the S Russian steppes ... that wasn't Cro-Magnon.  And I don't think that all the Aryans were blond or blue eyed, and still aren't.  They are a mixed group like all others.

We were only dealing with 450-550 CE ... you wanted to expand it in both time directions.  The Vikings show up in England, in a big way, around 850 CE.  That is the forming of the Danelaw.

Of course pre-historic migrations, are going to be unclear, and tendentious.  I am not sure I believe scholarship in making un-provable claims.
