Title: etienne is new here
Post by: etienne on March 10, 2017, 05:07:58 AM
Hi, thanks for creating this forum for atheists, of which I am, since about the age 1 hour(or less).  It's a WAR out there with billions of stupid religious people trying to take you down, your brain down and often your body too if they could pull that off.

Presbyterian family, supposedly, but never went to church growing up, except for a few "vacation Bible school" ventures over a few summers when I was a kid.  Sat in the back with another kid and cracked jokes about it.  That kid's in prison now, "finding Jesus", I presume.  The next door neighbor family was into the Bible and Jesus a bit--the Dad was more interested in $ of course-- and I liked their mom because she was friendly and good looking and cooked good food--so I went to their damn vacation Bible school for a few weeks a couple of summers.   It didn't "take".  Our family usually watched bowling on TV on Sunday mornings anyway, and I am thankful for that: bowling is REAL.

Never thought about "Gawd" much as a kid until some wacked out woman pointed to the clouds on a sunny summer day and said "Jesus is going to come down some day and save us".  I thought, "save us from what?"  And, "who is us"?  Anyway, that didnt stick either and I thought it was the weirdest idea I had ever heard of in my life.  My sister also had a miscarriage that brought her to Jesus, so I had to listen to that a fair amount, though she wasn't offensive about it.  I think that was in my Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath phase.  Steely Dan has always been my phase.

Fast forward to teenage years and Dad was borderline alcoholic--great guy, though--and Mom was maybe going to divorce him, but found Evangelical Jesus instead.  So, we all 3 went to that church, the pastor was cool, lot's of super cute chicks there was a bonus for me:  couldn't make damn heads nor tails out of what they were selling, so I dropped out after a few years.

Like Sam Harris, I have an interest in meditation/"Nirvana", but don't believe that is a supernatural "Gawd"--just something of the brain, a really GOOD something, so they say.  I have not "attained Nirvana", so you don't have to worry about that.

I'm a pro level musician, drums are my main "ax".  And like (dead)Jesus, I have some carpentry skills.  Also, med-school drop out from way back--can't stand hospitals and most Doctors.  Oddly, dentists don't bother me much.

In addition to my native tongue, American English, I speak Spanish and Brasilian Portugues fairly well, BELEZA!

I would LOVE to survive my own death if I didn't end up worse off, but ain't jack I can do about it: the shit's biological.  Which reminds me, I am a Socialists/Communist--ideologically--Marx/Che' Guevara/Mao type shit.  Historical Materialism, babay!

Feel free to hit me with your best shot, but then don't cry like a wuss if I hit back harder.

Welcome to our little band of heathens.
I have a Steely Dan CD in my car. One of my favorites for being on the road.

*Starts humming.* Are you reelin' in the years... :)

'Brigado, Senhor!  Donald Fagan is a true musical, song writing genius.  And he's still alive and kicking.  His work this century is stellar.

Waddup Homey?!  Hey, I like that welcome, thanks!  Hope I have a good time here too and not get attacked too much and booted, like what happens on "believer" boards.  I need a "safe space" here.

QuoteI think that was in my Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath phase.  Steely Dan has always been my phase.
Pink Floyd is rightfully the second greatest rock-band of all time, right after the Beatles, and just ahead of Led Zeppelin. The Who and the Rolling Stones round out the top 5. These facts are indisputable. All lower rankings are a matter of conjecture.

Personally, although I do like a few Steely Dan songs, I doubt they would make my top 40.

1)  Steely Dan
2)  Pink Floyd
3)  Eagles
4)  Doobie Bros
5)  ZZ Top(probably)

I'm sure there's somebody I'm not thinking of.  Other fav 70s bands would include, Sabbath, The Stones, CCR, ELP, Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Yes, Aerosmith, Chicago, EWF, James Taylor.

Honorable mention to Beatles for songwriting.  Ringo Star is just a very average drummer who got a break.  Not a huge fan of Zeppelin, though I like some of their songs.  Can't really stand the Who or the Doors(hate the Doors)

But since the 70s, as a musician, I've been deep into jazz and all it's variations, Latin, and Brasilian, and that's a whole nother universe.

Ya know, I really have no idea what 'cutting and jibbing' is. :)  I think it means I like how you are traveling, talking or something like that.

How can a drummer not appreciate Led Zeppelin? John Bonham was the greatest of all time(not to be confused with the greatest living, which would be Neal Peart).

Bu I'm glad to see you mention YES, in your favorite rock bands. They are actually my all time "favorite" rock band, which is a different list, than the "greatest" bands that I listed(in fact I can't stand the Stones, but I have them as number 5, on greatest of all time). YES, who began in 1969, are finally being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, this year. Is there any other band, that makes music like YES?

LOL, at least you didnt say "Ringo is the greatest", like most people do.  Bonham, meh.  And no, Neal Peart is great, but I can think of a 100 drummers off the top of my head that exceed him.  Phil Collins, for one, I would put in that category.  Check out Phil in "Brand X, Moroccon Roll" from the 70s--unbelievable album.  Mike Portnoy, Dennis Chambers, Sonny Emory, Dave Weckl, Robbie Ameen, Carlos Vega, Horatio Hernandez, Simon Phillips, Lenny White, I could go on and on.  Steve Gadd is my all time fav all around drummer, though--Steely Dan, "Aja".

Good to see Yes still groovin'.  Forgot to mention ELP, another great group I saw live--Brain Salad Surgery.

Never thought Ringo was all that good--not that I have any basis to know, one way or the other.  Ordinary is guess is what I'd heard about him--and lucky.  My favorite is probably Sandy Nelson.  I love 'Let There Be Drums!".

I remember the name Sandy Nelson, can't quite place the style, swing jazz, right?  Drumming has gone conpletely of the charts these days w technique, but that doesn't always translate to good MUSIC.  Thats why Gadd is my fav, most musical drummer out there, thats why he got rich in the studio.

I am reaching into the misty past----but Sandy Nelson was considered one of the best and I think 'Let There Be Drums' was on the top of the charts back in the day.  I recall the name Buddy Rich, too, but I don't think he moved my needle much.  He was early 60's I think.  Drums and guitars--love it.  Also loved Duane Eddy--40 Miles of Bad Roads and Rebel Yell.  Ventures.

Buddy Rich, who I saw a few times, was the King of big band swing drumming, died in '87.  He innovated alot of hand technique.

Here's a superb drums/guitar demo you might enjoy:

In the early 70's I was a stage hand at a casino at Lake Tahoe. There was a band on the main show who had a drummer who was the first drummer I ever heard who made music on the drums, I mean they sang not just kept the tempo. Can't for the life of me remember his name and the band was put together for the show. BTW the show was called Love In. Well, I could go on about the show for hours but not here.

Lots of Chicago music.

I'm sure we all have our preferences. I really like Ron Bushy, especially his drum solo in Inna Godda Da Vida. I was a wanna-be drummer who never got the chance to actually drum. I do tap my fingers a lot, and people just think I'm nervous. But I'm about as nervous as The Dude.

Thanks.  There are guys like that, yes, they are true musicians.  I heard a very musical jazz drummer with Hank Jones(piano) at a festival one time.  You dont forget those guys.  Steve Gadd is like that, thats why he got hired by everybody.  Chicago is a great town for music.
