I really can't blame Mrs. Trump for repeating Mrs. Obama's speech; unlike politicians, celebrities can only remember a limited number of platitudes.

I read an article on this today that suggested the plagiarism was likely due to the fact that mainstream Republicans who aren't desperate (like Gingrich and Christy) or stupid (Palin and Earnst) are avoiding Trump like the plague, and it's not just politicians but also others who work in politics.  Because of this his staff is a lot of second and third tier people instead of top notch.  The article suggested that this was not a speech she wrote herself, but definitely written by a professional speechwriter (but not Michelle Obama's professional speechwriter).

Personally, I wouldn't be surprised if it was sabotage.  The Never Trump people are not above slimy, underhanded tricks.  They are Republicans, after all, who don't care what the will of the people is, it's only fair if it goes the way they want it even if they have to throw out every vote they didn't like to get there.  What better way to support your cause of "vote your conscious" than to make Trump look really, really bad on day 1 of the convention?

Meh, its unfortunate for them because of the inevitable bad press. But I no more believe Melania Trump committed willful malicious plagiarism than I believe my ex had a headache all those nights. And just like the intimate details of my sex life, this event is meaningless in the grand scheme of history.

Of course she didn't actually write the speech-- "Melania's team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking,” Jason Miller, Trump’s communications adviser, said in a statement.

I doubt Mrs. Trump ever paid much attention to anything Mrs. Obama has ever said.

Hell, I watched Michelle's speech 8 years ago, and I can't remember a thing she said.  I just remember thinking she was a good speaker.  It seems obvious that the speech writers had to do some serious research to find a copy of Michelle's speech so they could copy it.  I'm sure it wasn't something lying there in their subconscious, and they just drug it up without realizing where it came from.  There's probably no actual copyright on a speech, but as speech writers for a presidential candidate, much more creativity than that should be part of the job description.  Trump should fire them.  If he doesn't, he just looks like a candidate that can't even hire people capable of actually doing the minimum work their job calls for.  It isn't just a potential SNL moment.  It is a poor reflection on the candidate.

Isn't Trump's answer to every policy question, "I'm going to hire the best people"? Not an auspicious start.

I agree that she did not commit 'willful malicious plagiarism', as well.  But since this was her speech, she has to take the responsibility of its content.  At best she was remiss in her editing of that speech.  She told people on a morning TV show that she had written most of that speech herself.  So, she has to take the responsibility--good and bad--for what she said.

I agree with that, but at the same time I couldn't care less about Mrs Trump.  Like all spouses of a presidential candidate, she's not running for any actual office and for all I know, she's not particularly eager to leave her mansion for the much smaller and less luxurious Oval Office.  This campaign has little and less to do with her.  So as far as I'm concerned, she can take a dump onstage and it wouldn't change my impression of the Trump-Pence campaign.

Was she remiss? Really? Are you suggesting that anyone in that sort of position where speeches are required but hired speech writers are used is ultimately responsible to vet every last word penned by said speech writers themselves so as to insure that no one who came before them ever uttered similar words?

I mean I'm not arguing with you, but if that's the realistic expectation then I can tell you right now, I would fail miserably every single time. My attitude is I hire them, I pay them to do a job, and I expect them to do that job. Which includes making sure I'm not going to say something that makes me look like an ass. In fact I would probably make that the very first bullet point on their one-pager job description sheet. Do not under any circumstances do anything that makes me look like an ass.

So really what we're talking about here is that Trumps wife sucks at hiring underlings.

Ouch. That's embarrassing. They couldn't hire a specialist to write a good speech with all that money they spend to the campaign? This woman's position could be used very efficiently in their position. No? She grew up in old socialist Yugoslavia, she became a US citizen in 2006 a year before she married Trump. Apparently she speaks 5 languages. But then the stuff comes up if you google this woman...lol.

There is a particular part she is talking about raising his son as a 'mini-Donald' that would give a normal human to urge to vomit. Apparently he fires nannies and some other personnel around the house and mommy is very proud of it! He is 9. *Insert psycho smile here. (Pretty much what I meant in the 'is Trump racist' thread. Probably this is how he was raised too.)

They even have a 'theory' about the incident that speech might be sabotaged. LOL

A Theory: Donald Trump's Ex-Campaign Manager Deliberately Sabotaged Melania Trump

Yes, she was remiss.  If I am going on a national TV broadcast I am making sure what I say is accurate or clearly stated as my opinion.  I say it, I own it.  If a hired speech writer makes a mistake and it is pointed out that that was the case, then I'd say that I made a mistake and that that was why.  I would not come on national TV the next morning and say that I wrote the speech.  I would apologize for the mistake, show what the mistake was and make any other comments that was needed.  As it was, if Melania had come on TV the next day and said that she did not realize that somebody else said what she had, I'd simply say I was sorry for not citing her, but that in this case, we agree on those particular concepts.  That would have solved any problem for her and even been a plus.

Something I happen to know... won't get into specifics. They have books with noses in them at plastic surgery offices. Now they have software that can take a set of photographs and superimpose a new nose on an old one. But if you see what looks familiar on a person it is because they selected model New Roman B, which happens to be popular. I can tell Julia Roberts had plastic surgery because I saw her nose in the book.

I agree that stuff like this is normal in politics. Lying, plagiarizing, promising, impossible things, misrepresenting yourself, and telling people what they want to hear all falls under the umbrella of dishonesty.   It's exactly what is wrong with politics.  I care about it.

Now if you are telling me I shouldn't lose sleep over it because there's nothing I can do to stop it, then I would agree.  If you are telling me that this type of behavior is typical of both parties, I would somewhat agree to that too.  If you are telling me that this is no worse than what Hillary would do, I agree.  If you are telling me it wasn't Melania's fault, I would say well, yes and no.  Maybe Melania was nothing more than a dupe for her husband.  But I care, and I'm actually insulted by the dishonesty and misrepresentation that pervades our system of governance.

Yes, lying is lying, but this is more of a harmless lie. I actually like what Barack Obama did when he copied other people's words. He copied some really good stuff, like the "Just words" speech. Do I care that Barack or his speech writers took inspiration from some speeches they saw and copied huge chunks of the wording? No. I actually think it was a smart move by Obama.

Trump spin machine fell down again.  An opportunity lost.

I was surprised to hear no heads would roll over this gaffe until I read the above.

A democrat writing for Trumps wife.  Plagiarism of a democratic speech.  Many positive ways to spin this to show Trump doesnt care about the politics, its the ideas that matter.  Reaching across the aisle.  Presenting words to his audience (republican) who are likely to have never heard the words Michelle Obama spoke.  And the audience agreed with her speech.  See we can work together for the things everyone agrees are important....

blah blah blah... end of Potential spin missed example.

Yeah... he may win this one...

Quoting others is done constantly in academic research.  It's considered good form, but the rule is to always foot note it and give proper credit.  I dunno if politics is actually considered academic when one is engaged in politics.  As a discipline it's taught in higher education as political science, so I think it's academic.

If one were to take giving credit seriously, which obviously was not the intention of the speech writer here, Melania would have said something like, "I'd like to quote remarkable words of Michelle Obama spoken 8 years ago."  Yeah right!  That would go over well at a Republican convention.  People would be looking at each other thinking, "WTF?  Does this ditz even understand that we all hate Michelle and wish she were dying of cancer?"

Of course, who knows where Michelle got her speech.  But Hell, I don't want to take this shit too seriously.  This election year is sure to be a potential riot of entertainment and if one gets overly pedantic he's going to miss all the fun.
